Ever since Dashti gave the cat to Lady Saren, Lady Saren has been so happy and constantly smiling. Now Osol, Dashti little boy friend is going to be hung because he pushed a chief and when she fell, he kicked her. It was really bad because she was gentry, the highest level in authority, so Osol had to be punished but Dashti thought it was to extreme to hang him. He was hung that night and Dashti wouldn't go see his body. Lady Saren is so happy that she works so much faster and everyone is impressed with that. So, since she has been working so much faster she has been moved up to arranging food on platters. Several days later Khan and his army are back and Khan is wounded and a tenth of his warriors are dead. Dashti has been working on Khan to try to heal him. He has an arrow wound through his side and it has turned into a fever. Dashti sings and sings until her voice is hoarse. Khan isn't getting any better even with all the treatments that everyone has given him. Dashti is ready to give up until she remembers how when she was young and she fell into a thorn bush and her arm swelled and swelled, and no matter what her mother was calm and sang to her until she was better. She went back and stayed with Khan and sang to him. She has been singing to him for the past six days, she had sang all the healing songs so many times that she started to sing the songs that little kids sing when they are playing. By this time she can barely talk but she will not give up on him. She put her hands on his head and started singing, he suddenly woke up she didn't startle and just kept singing. She started to pull her hands away and he put his hand over hers on his chest. She left that night so she could go get some rest and the next morning when she went in there he was sitting up and he was not pale anymore. He gave her a greeting that mucker's give to each other. Lady Vachir is not happy with Dashti because she has become close to her soon to be husband and she is always frowning and never in a happy mood. Lady Vachir says her back hurts and wants Dashti to sing healing songs to her and Dashti does what she is told. She said that Dashti healing songs don't work and she doesn't know why Khan keeps her around. Dashti was mad and says, "A song can only work if the hearer wills it. Do you perhaps enjoy the back pain? Or maybe your back didn't pain you to begin with?" Lady Vachir slapped her and she thinks, "What is it about gentry that they're always slapper people?" Dashti laughed and that make Lady Vachir very mad. Dashti leaves her to be alone now. She returns to Khan's room and she hears news of Khasar's warriors resting and is regrouping from the war. Khasar is going to come to Khan's tower to defeat him once he has gathered more warriors and is ready. A few days later many people were in Khan's room talking about Khasar's army is setting up camp outside Khan's walls. Since Khan has taken in so many people from the other realms they won't have enough food to last them through the winter but Khasar's army will be able to make it through. They are talking about what to do and if they should attack. Dashti says that they will have to trick him because he betrayed Under, the god of tricks and they can use that against him. She doesn’t know how to trick him but she knows that they have to try somehow. Dashti went to talk to Lady Saren about Lord Khasar, and what she knows about him. Lady Saren tells her that when she was little and was at Khasar's tower that he took her outside, when the sun was just setting and showed her that he can turn into a wolf. In the morning she goes to Khan's chamber to share the news of what she now knows. When Dashti walks in, the war chief was saying, "He's declaring he won't attack us if we give him Lady Saren." Khan couldn't believe what he was hearing, he didn't even know that Lady Saren was in his tower. He was saying how when he went to visit Lady Saren in the tower that Khasar was camped by the tower and had two hundred men and Khan only had thirty men, so he had to leave. He thought Khasar would break her out and take her back with him. Dashti had promised that she would tell Khan that she was Lady Saren to see what his reaction would be. Khan knew there was more that the chief was not telling him and he asked. The chief said he would take Khan if they wouldn't give him Lady Saren. No body was going to let him do that, suddenly Dashti blurts out, "Here, I'm Lady Saren." Khan was surprised and was saying Dashti, and Dashti said Dashti is my maid's name. Khan stepped forward and kept asking more questions, and he kept moving forward and asking more questions. Dashti told of how they broke out and came to his tower. He said he had never actually seen Lady Saren and that they had only spoken through letters. Dashti asked him to forgive her but he interrupted her and said, "Don’t you dare ask my forgiveness! After abandoning you, leaving you to Khasar and the rats and darkness and starvation, all because I was too afraid. I’m unforgivable, Dashti... my lady. But will you?" He got down on his knee’s and held her hands against his face and asked her to forgive him. She said to him don’t kneel to me. He stood up and said that he was sorry. Suddenly Dashti said that, "He’s a wolf." That he turns into a wolf at night and that is how he is such a fierce warrior and that they should be able to trick him now. Dashti said, "Send me down to him, send him Lady Saren, and let me." Khan cut her off and said they wouldn’t consider that. They were done talking and they took her to a room higher up and had a bed and soft sheets, it was a room that was for a Lady. She had sent for Lady Saren down in the kitchen and when she came up Shria the maid was still standing in there and then she finally left. Dashti said, "I did it, my lady." Lady Saren said thanks. Lady Saren says she must return to the kitchen because she has platters that she has to prepare for the feast tonight. Dashti is relieved that she did what Lady Saren had asked her to do. Dashti is looking out of her window and can see Khasar’s men and their fires out in Khan’s field’s.
